FIREFIGHTERS CITED FOR BRAVERY

Four Fort Smith Firefighters were honored Friday, October 2 for their bravery and dedication to duty.  They share the distinction of Fire Fighter of the Year.  During a Steak Fry, hosted by the Fort Smith Noon Exchange Club, Captain Ted Abbey, Captain Mark Hess, Driver Boyd Walters, and Driver Michael Brammer were cited for the daring and brave rescue of a man caught in a burning residence on July 12, 2009.  Awards were presented to all four men by club president, Paul Rivaldo and Fire Chief, Mike Richards.

In all, four Fire Stations were called out just after midnight to extinguish a blaze on North 7th Street.  The four men cited, entered the residence which was consumed in flames and smoke to conduct the rescue.  The victim was rescued and transported to the hospital.  He has since recovered fully.  Two members of the rescue team were injured.  One was treated and released from Sparks while Driver Brammer is still recovering.

The Fort Smith Noon Exchange Club is dedicated to four programs of service including Americanism, Community Service, Youth and the Prevention of Child Abuse.  Throughout the year, the club recognizes Law Enforcement Officers, Fire Fighters and private citizens for action beyond the call of duty.
